The Color Spectrum In Fruits And Vegetables
1988, Socrates Sculpture Park, Long Island City, New York
Fruits, vegetables, wooden fruit stand. (about 16’ x 2’ x 5’)
Inspired by the gay pride flag, the neatly stacked produce of Korean corner markets that began appearing appearing throughout New York City in the mid-1980s, and Ellsworth Kelly’s color spectrum paintings at MOMA, the fruit stand in the park featured eggplant, red onions, red apples, oranges, yellow squash, lemons, green apples, limes, zucchini, kale and grapes on the opening day of Socrates’ 1988 spring show. Helen Lessick assisted the project. Toward the end of the opening, attendees were invited to help themselves. Twenty years later, the installation served as inspiration for the collage series of the same name.
